Verbs, Transitive Verbs, Predicates and Motiv

Verbs, Transitive Verbs, and Predicates: These are all found in Motiv’s mission statement. They are easy to find because they are in all caps. It’s no accident, our mission statement could have been written using nouns to describe what we do but we chose transitive verbs because they more accurately describe how we conduct our services – hands on.

• Elevate – verb (transitive)

MISSION STATEMENT: Motiv aims to EDUCATE, EQUIP and EMPOWER voiceless, marginalized and disempowered people throughout the world, We do this so they can EMANCIPATE themselves from what holds them down and in turn use what they have learned to ELEVATE their neighbors and communities in the same way.

“…voiceless, marginalized, and disempowered people…” Yeah, that’s the predicate part of our mission statement.

What’s interesting about our 5Es is that the first three (Educate, Equip, Empower) we do. We created the tools and processes to make those three things happen. But once they have been trained with the right tools, it is up to the recipient to take action. They EMANCIPATE and ELEVATE themselves and others with this new knowledge and skills they have gained.

Merriam-Webster defines the word emancipate as follows:

1. to free from restraint, control, or the power of another especially to free from bondage
2. to release from parental care and responsibility and make sui juris
3. to free from any controlling influence (such as traditional mores or beliefs)

Motiv works with people and communities, some of whom fit the first definition of emancipate written above, especially when we can rescue someone from sex trafficking. We are trying to expand our efforts in that area.

The meat of what we are doing lies with people who feel trapped by the bounds of poverty. The controlling influence for most people we see is the notion that, because their parents and grandparents lived in poverty, they must live that way too. Traditional mores or beliefs have a heavy influence on people.

Not anymore. Once trained by Motiv staff knowledge is obtained and skills are learned and opportunity knocks. Newly trained they can now go out into their communities and contribute to its overall wellbeing. At the same time, they open opportunities for gainful employment and/or a chance to form their own business.

Additionally, they have learned money management and how to save money to help achieve goals they never thought possible. They are freed from the constraints of centralized banking and fiat currency. They have formed their own micro communities where Bitcoin has taken root, forming their own microeconomy – and it works.

It’s incredible how the digital age reaches even the most outlying villages in remote Peru. Already equipped with mobile phones and familiar with their operation, adding a Bitcoin wallet was assimilated with fundamental training in money management and the very basics of finance. The people and their communities are starting to thrive and the overall feeling in the communities is that there is a better life coming to them. They feel they now have the skills and ability to emancipate themselves from their current situations and make it so. The people also feel that they control their own emancipation. Thus, we see that the chains of poverty can and are being broken. Motiv exists to make sure that happens.
